The cold storage plant that is supposed to cool UK’s electricity could be at risk
When the power grid shuts down, the vast majority of the UK’s power stations will still be supplying electricity to households and businesses.
But the vast, vast majority will not be using cold storage to keep the lights on.
The Royal Electrical and Mechanical Engineers (REEMA) has been tasked with developing a system that would store and deliver power when it’s not being used.
It will be up to the industry to decide if it is feasible to build such a system in England.
Cold storage can be an effective way of reducing the amount of energy used to power the lights in buildings and homes, although it’s also potentially dangerous because it can cause dangerous levels of radioactivity.
For now, however, there are plans to build a large, complex, and expensive cold storage site at a former power station in Cumbria.

Power companies have already invested in the site in order to provide the equipment and staff necessary to maintain it.
However, it is estimated that if the site goes dark, the electricity would be lost.
Rebecca Johnson, a policy analyst with think tank Policy Exchange, said the project was “too risky”.
“It is highly unlikely that the site could survive without the equipment,” she said.
She said the only thing to do would be to shut down the whole of South West England.
“If I have a heart condition and I could not do my job and I had to go back home and have a stroke, I could go to bed in bed in the middle of the night,” she told BBC News.
If the site were to be lost or damaged, the UK would be left with no electricity for a whole month.
It’s estimated that the UK could lose up to 2 million kilowatt hours (kWh) of electricity, meaning that, for example, one of the two people in the house would not have power for six days.
However, the site has a strong link to renewable energy sources.
REEMA is also funding an ambitious project in the Midlands to provide an electric system with a minimum of carbon emissions, which has been designed to be compatible with the new National Grid and is expected to provide electricity for up to 10 years.
This project will use wind power to provide energy in the form of thermal storage.
However it is unlikely that thermal storage could last for that long, as the energy is released as heat.
As the UK power system shuts down and the country becomes more and more reliant on fossil fuels, the cold storage system is expected be the first casualty of the grid’s shutdown.
But despite the dangers of cold storage, the project is a long way from being completed.
